Keep Your Protective Gear Working

A little upkeep goes a long way. Rinse mud off hard shells with cool water and mild soap, then let everything air dry out of direct sun. Pull removable liners and pads and wash them by hand so sweat doesn't break down the foam. Check straps, buckles, and hinges before longer rides, and look closely at any piece that took a hard impact. Crushed foam won't give you the best protection anymore, so swap it out.
