Sizing a youth motorcycle helmet correctly is crucial for both safety and comfort. An improperly sized helmet can compromise its protective capabilities and make for an uncomfortable ride. If you're unfamiliar with how to size a helmet, don't worry—our comprehensive Helmet Sizing Guide on the blog covers everything you need to know. Below is a simplified rundown to get you started:
Get the Best Motorcycle Helmet Fit for your Kid
Measure the Head: Using a soft measuring tape, measure around the widest part of your child's head. This is usually about an inch above the eyebrows and just above the ears. Make sure the tape is level and snug, but not tight. Record the measurement in both inches and centimeters for greater accuracy.
Consult the Size Chart: Each brand may have its own sizing chart, so consult the manufacturer's recommendations. Compare the head circumference measurement with the chart to determine the suitable helmet size (Small, Medium, Large, etc.). If you are in between sizes, start small and move to a larger size if it's too snug.
Check the Fit: Once you have the helmet, have your child try it on. A properly sized helmet should fit snugly all around their head. There should be no tight spots or pressure points, but it should not be loose enough to rotate or move easily. If the helmet does not fit your child's head, change sizes or opt for a different helmet entirely, as each has slightly different shapes and designs.
Chin Strap Test: Buckle the chin strap and tighten it until it’s snug beneath the chin. Your child should be able to open their mouth fully, but the helmet should pull down slightly when they do.
Shake Test: Ask your child to shake their head from side to side and up and down. The helmet should not slide or wobble on the head. There are cheek pads and interior padding to help with helmet sizing
Visibility and Comfort: Finally, make sure that the helmet does not obstruct your child’s field of vision and that they find it comfortable to wear for extended periods.
Readjust or Resize: If the helmet doesn't meet any of these criteria, you may need to readjust the fit, try a different size, or opt for a different model.
