What Makes Women’s Protective Gear Work

Women’s protective gear only works right when it’s actually made to fit women’s bodies and not just a scaled-down version of men’s gear. Having the correct fit at the shoulders, bust, torso, and hips means that all of the protective armor sits where it should in the riding position. Armor only does its job when it lands on the joint it’s supposed to cover. Shoulder, elbow and hip pads need to stay over bone rather than floating in the lining. At Motorcycle Closeouts, we understand the importance of carrying proper armor made specifically for women, so that everyone has the correct impact protection when riding. Most of our jackets ship with CE-rated impact protectors at the shoulders and elbows plus a slot for a back protector, and many add a waist zipper that connects to matching pants for a more secure two-piece setup. Match Your Gear to How You Ride

It is important to think about where you actually ride before you build out your gear kit. For daily rides around town, a textile jacket, plus riding jeans that allow you to go about your daily activities, might be the best option. If you’re more of a weekend sport rider, leather jackets with matching motorcycle pants work better for a more intense ride. If you’re a cold-weather rider, this calls for base layers under a textile shell to keep you insulated, whereas hot days call for mesh panels and vented riding pants that let air pass through.

Keep Your Gear in Shape

Gear that’s cared for protects longer, meaning it's worth it to build a short routine around what each piece needs. For a leather jacket, brush off dust after a ride, spot-clean salt and bug splatter with a damp microfiber cloth, and work in a leather conditioner twice a year to stop the hide from cracking at the seams. Textile shells and riding jeans come clean in cold water on a gentle cycle once you unzip the armor and empty the pockets, and they hold their waterproof membrane longer when you reproof the outer face after every few washes. Hand wash motorcycle gloves in cool water with a drop of mild soap, press them flat in a towel, and reshape the fingers before they dry so the palms don’t stiffen. Motorcycle boots dry best with the liners pulled out and a boot tree inside, which holds the ankle support shape while moisture leaves the leather or synthetic material.
